Retrofitted last year with a new V-6 powertrain, a retuned suspension and a new interior, the
Dodge Avenger comes back for the 2012 model year still intent on rehabbing its rental-car image. It's undoubtedly better than it was before, but the Avenger still struggles as it competes with some family-sedan powerhouses including the Ford Fusion and Kia Optima.
Carried over almost unchanged in 2011, the Avenger still looks right. It's a mini-Charger, and it has a lock on brand unity that few small cars carry over from their successful big siblings. Dodge's big crosshair grille takes up residence on the nose, but it's the upkick to the rear quarters that connects the Avenger more to the Charger sedan. Inside, the cabin was polished up somewhat in the 2011 model year, but not to the same level as the Chrysler 200. The dash cap's a little more sculpted, the climate controls are streamlined, and some nice details of bright and matte plastic contrast with the softer-touch pieces. The lower half of the dash was mostly left untouched, and it wears lower-grade plastic than the 200, and some of the same carryover gauges and buttons are more noticeable here.

Called the XA Alpha concept, some reports say that it's underpinned by the Swift platform, while others report that the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy off-roader, based on the Jimny, provides the chassis. For comparison purposes, the XA is just a few inches shorter and narrower than an Evoque, but the same height as the Evoque four-door.
Plans for production are said to rest with audience reception, which appears to have – understandably – been quite positive. If and when a production version does arrive, you can probably kiss the suicide doors goodbye, but it is predicted to be offered with four-wheel drive and "a range of K-Series petrol engines and 1.3-liter DDIS engine."

Recalibrating the Toyota Prius - News.

In terms of ingress/egress, driver comfort and even the ability “to sit behind one’s self,” my particular ordering is Prius, Leaf and Volt. A Full Disclosure here: As many readers know, I’m bigger than the average bear, have a disproportionately long torso and a less than agile back as well. Also, curiously, the driver seat has a height adjustment missing in the passenger seat of a Prius. As a front seat passenger, I have equal head room in Prius and Leaf. No contest, though, in the rear seat. I find the Volt’s head room interference back there to be well nigh claustrophobic.
All three are 5-door hatchbacks, a layout that I find very useful. Indeed, if I owned any of them, I’d likely fold the rear seats except when needed.
The contrast of performance among the three is strong. In its initial “charge depletion” mode, the Volt behaves like a pure electric. As such, it’s the quickest of the trio. Once in “charge sustaining” mode, its engine is relatively unobtrusive. This plug-in series hybrid is good, sound, innovative technology.
The Leaf’s performance isn’t far behind, and indeed I find it the sportiest of the trio. Alas, its inherent pure EV range makes it unsuitable for some missions, namely the San Francisco portion of my adventure.

A few months back, we told you that Honda had a redesigned CR-V in the works for 2012. Now, the automaker announced that the new affordable compact SUV is set to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Joining the 2012 CR-V is an all-electric version of the Honda Fit, which is slated for the 2013 model year.
The introduction of the Fit EV will likely help Honda establish its stake in the electric vehicle market, which currently includes cars like the Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi i and the upcoming Chevrolet Spark EV. “Borrowing heavily from the look of the internal-combustion Fit, the EV concept featured a high-density coaxial motor and a lithium-ion battery park,” writes Edmunds. “The concept has a top speed of 90 mph and has 70-100 miles of driving range per charge.”

I’m expecting my first child, so a surefire way to pique my interest is to have me test any car that’s remotely family-friendly. So it wasn’t as a spec-happy car reviewer that I evaluated the

Jeep Patriot press loaner I had last week. It was as a mom-to-be who’s actually in the market for a family car.

The Patriot makes a strong case for itself as a baby-mobile. It’s an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick for 2011. The four-wheel drive model with an automatic transmission that I tested gets an EPA-estimated 21/26 mpg – not bad for something that can handle light off-roading. The Patriot’s classic Jeep-ish styling also appealed to me. It stands out in a sea of soft and round crossovers. Then there’s the price: starting at $15,995, the Patriot won’t bust family budgets. My test car stickered at $25,147, but had a lot of features, including four-wheel drive, Bluetooth, iPod interface, heated front seats and satellite radio.
I also liked the way the Jeep Patriot drives. Unlike a lot of SUVs that can head off-road, it was comfortable and smooth around town, but had just enough roughness to remind you that yeah, you’re in a Jeep. Even though it doesn’t handle as well as other crossovers do, that touch of truck made it fun to drive. It felt rugged, but not uncomfortable. Its small size and trail-ready turning radius made it perfect for tight parking lots.

Ford Motor Company has a long history of building successful hot hatchbacks. Soon to join the ranks of such icons like the Cosworth Escort and Focus RS could be the next hot-rod Fiesta, the ST. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Ford Fiesta ST Concept hits at the upcoming line of high performance small cars to come out of the blue oval. “The Fiesta has a rich history of high-performance models so a new ST performance model is a logical next step in our performance vehicle strategy for our global small cars,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development.
Under the hood of the concept is the 1.6 liter version of Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged inline four cylinder. Using variable cam timing, direct injection and a single turbocharger, the ST makes a stout 178 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Matched to a six speed manual transmission and front wheel drive, 62 mph can be achieved in less than seven seconds. In a straight line, the Fiesta ST will officially be a hot hatch.

On the outside, the ST looks the part as the body lines have been tweaked and sculpted. New is the large, “trapezoidal” grille with a honeycomb mesh finish. The rear bumper features a functional diffuser with dual exhaust and everything is lower than the standard Fiesta. 17 inch wheels round out the ST, which manages to pay homage to both its rally car cousin, the Fiesta WRC, and its big brother, the Focus ST.
“The Fiesta ST Concept shows in the most dramatic way possible that the qualities that define an ST are not limited to one model. The potential for delivering the ST experience to an even wider audience are laid bare by this striking new concept,” said Jost Capito, Ford’s director of Global Performance Vehicles. When Hyundai debuted the swoopy new 2011 Elantra, we were told that a hatchback-shaped Touring model would be coming down the pipeline, and since the last-generation model was nearly identical to the then-current i30 sold overseas, it would only make sense that this new five-door will make its way Stateside at some point (albeit with the necessary Europe-to-America adjustments). And might we say, she's quite unique looking, with a distinct bow-element grille and mirroring lower fascia.
Mum's the word on what sort of powertrains lie under the hood, and we'd really like to see what that rear hatch looks like, but we'll have those details within the next couple of days, as Hyundai is set to debut the all-new i30 at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week. The Dodge Charger SRT8 is back.
Scheduled to go on sale later this year, the 2012 Charger SRT8 adopts the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 that first debuted in the Challenger SRT8 392, here making an estimated 465 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are 5 down from the Challenger in each category, but, uh, who cares? The previous Charger SRT8 had “just” 425 hp and 420 lb-ft from its 6.1-liter V-8.
The new Hemi’s intake features active air flaps that vary the ram length based on engine speed, and new variable cam timing increases the duration of the intake-valve opening with the goal of stuffing more air in the cylinder. Fuel economy, for what it’s worth, will be improved over that of the outgoing engine, although no figures have been revealed yet.
We clocked the old SRT8 from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and that’s about where Chrysler pegs this new car’s abilities (in addition to a stated top speed of 175 mph). But we think it will be a little quicker than that: We estimate the car will cover a 0-to-60-mph sprint in 4.6 seconds, reach 100 mph in 11.0 seconds, and blast through the quarter-mile in 13 flat. Not bad for a four-door sedan that should weigh somewhere around 4350 pounds.

The rest of the SRT8 story may not be as mouth-watering as the engine, but it’s still pretty juicy. The five-speed automatic carries over from the last car, but this time it’s equipped with steering-wheel-mounted paddles to augment the side-to-side manumatic function of the gear selector.
The chassis has received plenty of attention, too, with a new pump for the hydraulic steering that Dodge says increases feel, as well as a standard two-mode adaptive suspension. The suspension interprets data such as steering angle and speed, vehicle speed, throttle position, and lateral acceleration to automatically vary shock stiffness. Besides the automatic setting, the driver can also select a Sport mode. Deceleration is handled by four-piston Brembo calipers, squeezing 14.2-inch front and 13.8-inch rear rotors. The brakes also incorporate a collision-anticipation function that tucks the pads snug against the rotors in anticipation of hot car-on-car (or car-on-object) action. A new underbody shield integrates brake ducting to mitigate brake fade.

Officially Official: 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK. The thing about innovation is that to follow up, you tend to need another dose of innovation to keep people interested. Case in point: Mercedes-Benz having shoes to fill with its little SLK. The original was one of the first cars on the market with a modern retractable hardtop, taking after its costlier forebearer, the SL. And fourteen years later, with nearly everyone fitting folding tin roofs to their convertibles, the Stuttgart has launched the third-generation model with Magic Sky Control.
The innovative roof, as we've reported in the build-up to its release, adjusts the tinting of the glass panels automatically. It's an option, and buyers can still get a solid metal folding roof or a fixed-tint glass one if the electronic trickery is too much. Naturally, though, that's not all that's new about the new SLK.
The latest compact roadster from Stuttgart sits on a new platform with new styling. Whereas the outgoing model aped the SLR with its Formula One-style nose, the new SLK takes its cues from the SLS AMG with its more upright grille. The new shape is also more aerodynamic, and Mercedes has incorporated a new transparent panel between the rear roll hoops that tilts to optimize airflow and keep turbulence in the cabin to a minimum.
The SLK will launch in the North American market in SLK350 guise, packing a 3.5-liter V6 good for 302 horsepower and a 5.4-second sprint to 60 mph. The 1.8-liter, four-cylinder, 201hp SLK250 will follow, as is expected the naturally-aspirated 5.5-liter V8 SLK55 AMG. The new SLK gets its official launch later this month at the head office in Stuttgart in celebration of the company's 125th anniversary, with its public debut slated for the Geneva Motor Show in March. Dodge has revealed a special edition of Charger, just before the car’s official debut at the New York Auto Show. Dodge Charger Mopar Edition will be limited to just 1000 units and the price starts at $39 750.
Dodge Charger Mopar Edition is powered by a 5.7 liter HEMI V8 with 375PS (276 kW) and 535Nm (395 lb-ft). The engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox and the acceleration is pretty good – 0 to 60 mph in around 5 seconds.
Charger Mopar Edition has black exterior finish with an aggressive blue stripes over the hood and roof. The unique appearance is completed by a set of enormous 20” alloy wheels in dimensions 8J x 20” fitted with 245/45 ZR20 Goodyear F1 Supercar tires.
The interior boasts Katzkin leather seats, metallic trim and a strange shifter. There are also alloy pedals, Mopar floor mats and an individually-numbered plaque.
The suspension is also revised. It features bigger stabilizer bars (30 mm at the front and 20mm at the rear) and strut tower braces.
Last, but not least, Mopar installed a high performance braking system with enormous calipers and discs behind the 20” wheels.

Earlier this week, Dodge promised to unveil a high-performance model at the Chicago Auto Show. Today, the attending media witnessed the launch of not only the 2012 Charger SRT8 but also the R/T variants of the Charger, Durango, Grand Caravan, Journey and Challenger.
Available with RWD or AWD, the 2011 Dodge Charger R/T is motivated by a 5.7-litre HEMI V8 producing 370 horsepower. Accelerations from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) are completed in under 6 seconds. Meanwhile, the 2011 Dodge Durango R/T's HEMI engine is rated at 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The suspension and exhaust system have both been revised. Twenty-inch wheels, a body kit, seven suede seats and a 10-speaker, 506-watt sound system are part of the mix, too. And let's not forget the newly-available and exclusive Redline Red exterior paint colour.

In a stroke of genius, Chrysler picked San Francisco for the introduction of the revamped
2011 Dodge Charger. This city is for winners. Has been since, well, November 1 when the San Francisco Giants, the major league baseball team known for stellar pitching but questionable hitting, won their first World Series title since 1954.
Some of this vibe is bound to rub off on the 2011 Dodge Charger — or perhaps get spilled on it if we park too close to some Giants fans. But you don't need to be in some altered state to appreciate the changes Dodge has made to its big, rear-wheel-drive sedan for 2011. Most obvious is the new sheet metal, which is more faithful to the revered 1968-'70 Dodge Chargers without making the car look too old to cop an attitude. Indeed, the new front fascia is just as scary as Giants' closer Brian Wilson's beard.
Dig deeper into the 2011 Dodge Charger and you'll note that the carmaker has bulldozed the 2010 car's plasticky interior, retuned the suspension and swapped out the wheezy, old V6 engines for a new 3.6-liter Pentastar motor.
While the engineers were busy, the accountants found room to cut the price. You can have a Pentastar V6-equipped 2011 Dodge Charger SE for $25,995 — $200 less than a 2010 Charger with the 3.5-liter V6. Better yet, Dodge has lopped a full $2 grand off the base price of the V8-equipped Charger R/T ($30,995)

Safety. There is more than one reason why HID lighting has become such an important automotive upgrade in recent years, and it starts with security. Every year, there are more than thirty thousand auto accidents in the US alone, and guess what? While it is true that many drivers love HID headlights for their flashy style, one of their most underrated characteristics is the gigantic boost in safety they provide when it comes to nighttime navigating.

This requires a wire from the controller to the trailer brake. (This is why some connectors have as many as seven pins, to make provisions for the multiple circuits.) Use 12-ga. wire for this circuit. If you have electric trailer brakes, there must be an auxiliary battery and a breakaway switch in the circuit to slow the trailer if it comes loose from the hitch.

Keeping It All Together
How to make the connections? We've seen plenty of trailers lumbering down the road with blinking or dim lights. Odds are, if you looked at the wiring on one of these rigs, you'd see wires twisted together and insulated with electrical tape. Almost as bad are the automotive-style crimp connectors, which can't handle the vibration and moisture. Any crimp connector exposed to the elements will have a short life span. Don't even think of using household-style wire nuts--they'll unscrew themselves within a few hundred miles. We use the screw-in Posi-Lock connectors illustrated here for quick jobs. Our own trailer has every connection made with solder and PVC shrink tube.

As you button up, smear a film of dielectric grease on the hitch connectors to prevent moisture from corroding the pins.

A simple adapter can make 5-, 6- and 7-pin connectors work with other styles of connectors.Separate But Not Equal
A few vehicles use separate lamps for the brake and the turn-signal functions of the rear lights. That's fine--until you realize the trailer uses a single 2-filament bulb for all three functions. Adding another taillamp housing to the trailer is one option, but a simpler solution exists. Your trailer-rental place, and most auto parts stores, sell simple electronic adapters that will combine the brake-lamp and turn-signal functions. It installs in the harness just before the trailer connector.

Other Circuits
Some larger trailers have a separate circuit for clearance or marker lights, which are separate from the running lights in the taillamp assemblies. You may need to add another circuit to handle them. If you try to wire them in parallel with the customary pair of running lamps, you may overload the vehicle's headlamp switch--so you'll need to add a relay to handle the extra current.

There also may be a 12-volt circuit for running lights inside the trailer or for charging the trailer battery in the case of a travel trailer. This circuit probably will be hot whenever the engine is running, but it may be controlled by a switch on the dash. Be sure the wires are of a gauge large enough to handle the load (a fully discharged deep-cycle trailer storage battery may draw 20 or more amps when you start the engine). The use of a battery isolator is strongly recommended. This will prevent discharging the vehicle battery from the trailer, and prevent surges of current from overcooking the wiring or blowing a fuse.

But wiring a trailer may not be easy. If you're towing just for the day and don't ever plan to tow again, you can pick up some adapters that replace the taillight bulbs in your vehicle and have pigtailed wires hanging from them. How you route the wires out of the light sockets and down to the hitch can be problematic. And what if you have a trailer with simple 1-lamp lights and a car with multiple taillights, like most European cars? At the very least, odds are the trailer and vehicle use different connectors, as the trailering industry uses at least four different styles.

Red To Green To White
Let's start with the basics. Most trailers have three circuits--for running lights, and left and right brake lights. The brake lights will flash for the turn-signal function--it's up to the flasher relay in the car to know when the brake lights are on and to flash the appropriate filament. So technically, you need only three wires to the trailer plus a ground wire.

Always run a ground wire from the frame of the vehicle (not from the hitch or bumper) to the trailer. The metal-to-metal contact in the hitch is not reliable enough for a consistent connection.

This means you'll need a connector with at least four contacts. Not surprisingly, the standard flat-style connector for trailers uses four pins, with one unshrouded male pin on the vehicle end for the ground. Other common styles of connectors use five, six or seven pins, and these are the styles you'll see installed by the manufacturers on new vehicles. Why more than four? Larger trailers sometimes use a separate circuit for running lights on the sides and front of the trailer. Some trailers use electrically actuated brakes. It's not uncommon for enclosed trailers to have interior lights or accessories powered by the vehicle battery, so that means another circuit.

Do not freak. As long as you concern yourself with only one circuit at a time, this job will not require you to read those schematic diagrams that have tiny little wires labeled with type too small for even a lawyer to read.

Over-The-Counter
Got a 7-pin connector on the truck and an inline 4-pin connector on the trailer? We found an adapter at the auto parts store that makes this plug-and-play. Other permutations of connectors may be adaptable with off-the-shelf parts.

Splice It

Worst case--you have a car or truck with no provision for trailer lights, and a trailer with a harness that ends with chopped-off wires. You'll need nothing more complicated than a 12-volt test light or volt-meter, and some splicing capability. Start by turning on the vehicle's running lamps. Now probe the vehicle wiring to find out which wire leading to the taillights is hot. Splice into this wire and bring it to the vehicle side of the trailer connector. Which pin? The connector should come with a list specifying which pin handles which circuit. Follow it--but don't for a minute trust that someone else who wired your vehicle before you followed anything except his own whim. Tag each wire with its function as you identify it. Now you can turn off the running lamps and activate the left turn signal. Identify which circuit is the blinker, and repeat for the right turn signal. Wire all to the connector.

But not until you hook up the lights on the trailer. The trailer dealership won't let you leave until the lights work. And the trailer plug on the back of your truck doesn't remotely match the one on the trailer. The friendly trailer-hitch counterman points to the display of electrical connectors and suggests that if you can't get them working on your own, he can have a mechanic do it for you, first thing Monday morning.

Desperate Times, Desperate Measures
Trailer wiring may be easy. Many vehicles, particularly pickups and SUVs, come prewired for trailers. If there's a preinstalled hitch, the connector might already be in place behind a convenient spring-loaded cap. Or, if you've bought a new vehicle, you may find the harness needed to install the connector inside the glovebox. Simply unplug the connector to the rear lights on your truck, plug in the trailer harness between the male and female ends, and you're ready.

PARIS (Reuters) - Top automakers including General Motors Corp (GM) and Ford warned of tough times as the Paris Auto Show opened on Thursday amid concerns that slowing demand could force production cuts and job losses. ADVERTISEMENT

Volkswagen's latest Golf and Toyota's new Avensis saloon for Europe headline the event, which opened under a cloud as makers struggle to attract buyers worried by slowing economies and as a global credit crisis hurts auto leasing.

Ford Motor Co (F.N) Chief Executive Alan Mulally said he expected no recovery in the global car market until 2010 and urged governments and central banks to work together to bring stability back to the financial markets.

"2009 is not going to be better than 2008," Mulally told reporters at the show. "We won't see a recovery until 2010," he added, noting markets were down around the globe.

GM's (GM.N) chief operating officer, Fritz Henderson, warned of weakness to come in both the U.S. and western European markets.

"Certainly in the first half (of 2009) it's going to be weak," Henderson told reporters at the show, noting weakness in western Europe.

"We're all under some pressure for the next 12 to 24 months," he said.

Mitsuo Kinoshita, senior board member at Japan's Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T), said the credit crunch was hurting consumer confidence and could force Toyota to review its global sales targets of 9.5 million vehicles in 2008 and 9.7 million for next year.

A source at Europe's biggest automaker, Volkswagen (VOWG.DE), told Reuters that the company faced tough times at Spanish unit Seat and while the company's overall targets remain intact, it may have to consider trimming output.

"If markets continue to develop in such a dramatic way then we have to consider reining in production," the source told Reuters at the show.

Volkswagen Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn told reporters that VW expects to be able to generate a small gain in unit sales and revenue next year despite turmoil on financial markets, while confirming VW's outlook for 2008.

He also said the company, which plans to start making cars at a U.S. plant in Tennessee, wants to benefit from government aid offered to U.S. makers.

"We will raise our hand when the time comes," Winterkorn said.

President George W. Bush on Tuesday signed into law a spending bill which included guarantees of $25 billion in low-interest loans for U.S. automakers Ford, GM and Chrysler LLC.

The aid comes as U.S. demand slumps and makers tool up for production of more fuel efficient and environmentally-friendly vehicles, including electric models.

Major automakers reported a 26-percent plunge in U.S. September sales, including Ford off 34 percent and Toyota down 32 percent, its steepest decline since 1987.

Auto executives said Americans had either walked away from vehicle purchases or been stymied by a lack of financing or requirements for larger down-payments.

Renault SA (RENA.PA) CEO Carlos Ghosn told reporters at the show that no one could rule out difficult years for the auto sector in 2009 and 2010 and promised an update on its plans October 23.

Renault outlined a job cuts plan last month.

European rivals Fiat (FIA.MI) and Peugeot-Citroen (PEUP.PA) are also trimming costs to safeguard profits.

Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne this week warned of the knock-on effect which the financial crisis threatened to have on manufacturing.

"(It) will have repercussions at an international level if it is not resolved in America. It will have an impact on industry, that is without doubt," Marchionne said.

Peugeot CEO Christian Streiff told reporters at the show that the French maker had achieved 2 billion euros ($2.79 billion) in cost savings in the past 18 months and expected "great progress" in cost reduction in the near future.

The firm is sticking to its 2010 objectives despite the market's tougher climate, Streiff said.

Emmanuel Bulle, a credit analyst at Fitch, told the Reuters Auto Summit on Tuesday that the European market decline was far from over and could go to minus 20 percent.

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF.–The Dodge Ram has serious fans – like the guy who ran up to me in the Starbucks parking lot to show off his Ram logo tattoo.

Like a wide-eyed kid on Christmas, he then circled the 2009 two-tone Crew Cab Ram I was driving around in.

"Man, that's pretty," he finally said.

My tattooed friend was reacting to the subtle (yet powerful) redesign of the Ram "big-rig" look – a design that first rolled out in 1994. With some rounding of the fenders and a forward-tilt to the cross-hair grille, the latest version of the truck has kept its silhouette, yet has also pulled the lights back over a new one-piece bumper, taking on a faster, rakish, slippery look.

It comes by its new profile honestly: the Ram has spent some 300 hours in wind tunnel testing alone. The result is better aerodynamics, but also the quietest Dodge cab yet. With the air flowing smoothly over and off the truck there is none of the buffeting noise of the previous generation.

Currently, it's safe to say that with this makeover (it's now in its third generation) it is reaching icon status. But the bigger story is actually inside where a completely new design shows up the old one as just plain bad.

The new interior features redesigned, bolstered seats and soft-touch material in two- and even three-colour patterns (rather than nasty hard battleship grey plastic). Elements in some of the higher end models include a new centre console, upper and lower glove boxes and a sculpted dashboard featuring chrome, leather and cloth accents, including items such as real saddle stitching across the dash.

Other available options include power adjustable pedals, double the number of previous storage spaces and for the first-time items like heated and cooled front seats; heated rear seats and even a heated steering wheel.

With this new interior, Dodge appears to be back in the same league as its chief rival, Ford's F-150.

The J.D. Power report, based on sales through Aug. 17, estimates sales for the month will come in at around 1.21 million vehicles, or 13.4 million vehicles on a seasonally adjusted annual rate. That is down from the August 2007 seasonally adjusted rate of 16.2 million vehicles, but up 6.3% from July.

"Both cash rebates and APR programs continue to rise from year-ago levels, as auto makers struggle with weakening light-truck sales," said J.D. Power. The average time a vehicle sat on the lot during the first 14 selling days of the month rose 14% from a year ago, it said, "adding pressure to increase incentive programs."

All major manufacturers had year-to-year retail-sales declines through the first 14 days of the month, although Nissan Motor Co.'s decline was modest. "That general pattern is expected to hold through the remainder of the month, with only GM by the end of the month expected to show a significant improvement over its month-to-date performance as its incentive program takes effect," J.D. Power said. Only Nissan is expected to finish the month with higher sales -- up 1.5%. Declines of 24% to 30% are forecast for GM, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC, while Toyota Motor Corp. is projected to have a 13% decline.

"With the month now half over, the pattern of very weak sales that has persisted for at least the last several months is clearly continuing into August," said J.D. Power Chief Economist Bob Schnorbus. Always run a ground wire from the frame of the vehicle (not from the hitch or bumper) to the trailer. The metal-to-metal contact in the hitch is not reliable enough for a consistent connection.

This means you'll need a connector with at least four contacts. Not surprisingly, the standard flat-style connector for trailers uses four pins, with one unshrouded male pin on the vehicle end for the ground. Other common styles of connectors use five, six or seven pins, and these are the styles you'll see installed by the manufacturers on new vehicles. Why more than four?
