Cooling Systems

It’s hot. And you’re stuck in traffic, again. No biggie, just crank up the stereo and the a/c, and wait it out. Creeping along, you start to smell that cloying, unmistakable maple-syrup-in-a-Turkish-bath-smell of boiling coolant. Turning off the air helps for a few minutes. Turning on the heater helps for another few hundred yards, but the inevitable happens: a geyser of evil green coolant erupts from under your hood. It takes an hour
for the engine to cool off and you can pour some water into it. That’s okay - CARiD is here to help. If your car’s cooling system fails, your car will grind to a halt by the side of the road in short order. Two-thirds of the energy in a gallon of gasoline turns to heat inside your engine, and it’s the responsibility of the to remove that heat promptly and efficiently. The entire cooling system is filled with a mixture of ethylene glycol and water, laced with additives to retard corrosion.
This coolant is pumped through passages in the cylinder block and heads by the water pump, which is usually driven by a rubber belt. It then passes through the radiator to dump heat into the air passing through it. The customary 50-50 concentration of coolant has a boiling point well above 212F. Cars have pressurized cooling systems—as high as 16psi—so the boiling point is even higher, as high as 300F. That same 50-50 concentration also won’t freeze until -34F, providing low-temperature protection

2013 Audi R8 Preview

Following an early reveal late last night, Audi has now released the full images and details for its updated R8 supercar, which sails into showrooms early next year.
The big news is the availability of a new seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission across the R8 range, with Audi finally deciding to do away with the clunky R tronic automated manual that plagued the previous model. A conventional six-speed manual is still available on some models, however.
The other major update is the addition of a new range-topping R8 V10 plus model.
At the front of all the new R8s we can see a revised headlight design, with the daytime running lights slicing through the center, and a slightly different overall shape. The grille remains very close to the current model, as do the side air dams and splitter, though these too are new. As an option, Audi installs a front splitter made of carbon fiber (standard on the R8 V10 plus).
All R8 models also benefit from LED headlights as standard. The individual diodes for the high and low beams have been placed above and below the strip-shaped daytime running lights, which are specially actuated to serve as indicators. In addition, static turning lights are integrated in the headlights.
At the rear, more LED detailing can be found, including around the engine bay. The indicators for the tail lights also light up in pattern towards the outside of the unit, in the direction the driver wishes to turn. Finally, all models have the same twin exhaust pipe design with a glossy finish, though the pipes on the R8 V10 plus are painted black.
The engine lineup is still much the same, with the base 4.2-liter V-8 unit delivering 430 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Matched to the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, this engine will rocket the R8 to 60 mph from rest in around 4.3 seconds and see it reach a top speed of 186 mph.

Toyota Avalon Grille

Toyota’s CEO Akio Toyoda has already promised more fun-to-drive cars, and now a company executive promises design is becoming a greater priority, as well.
The bold statement is similar to one of Steve Jobs’ most notable quotes: “A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.” Hunter says future car design will be more confident and optimistic, rather than cute or surprised. He notes that Toyota has recently unveiled bold designs including the new 2013 Toyota Avalon and the NS4 concept car, which debuted in Detroit.
“We’re moving to more unexpected designs; that’s our big message,” Hunter said to WardsAuto. “In the past, let’s face it, we had boring design.”
We should expect bolder designs from Lexus, too, as more models continue to adopt the spindle-styled grille currently used for the refreshed RX crossover and new GS sedan. Lexus showed off the stunning LF-LC hybrid concept at this year’s Detroit auto show, yet another hint of the brand’s future design language.
This smooth ride presents a stunning picture of grace when fixed up in the front and CARiD.com brings you the Toyota Avalon Grills that deliver the message. Chevy Volt Spoiler

It appears the right-wing wall against the Chevrolet Volt is starting to crumble. Following months of beating on the Volt, Fox News aired a puff piece on how great the Volt is earlier this week. Now we hear that former president George H.W. Bush has purchased a Volt for his son Neil as a birthday present. As our friend Chelsea Sexton said on Twitter, "Can't wait to see what Fox News makes of that!"
In a sense, the Bush family should be among the first to buy one of GM's plug-in hybrids, since the $7,500 federal tax credit that the car qualifies for was put into place during President George W. Bush's second term. Since President Obama has also promised to buy a Volt when he gets out of office, that makes the Volt a vehicle that presidents from both major American parties can agree on.

Spoiler is perhaps the most spoiled accessory that you may have on your vehicle. Sleek and stylish, the only thing it can spoil is the unfavorable air flow. Manufactured to the exacting standards by the most trusted brands in the industry, the spoilers we store for you are ready to transform your vehicle and make it look like an exciting performance car.
