2009 Dodge Ram: Load of Upgrades


SANTA BARBARA, CALIF.–The Dodge Ram has serious fans – like the guy who ran up to me in the Starbucks parking lot to show off his Ram logo tattoo.
Like a wide-eyed kid on Christmas, he then circled the 2009 two-tone Crew Cab Ram I was driving around in.
"Man, that's pretty," he finally said.
My tattooed friend was reacting to the subtle (yet powerful) redesign of the Ram "big-rig" look – a design that first rolled out in 1994. With some rounding of the fenders and a forward-tilt to the cross-hair grille, the latest version of the truck has kept its silhouette, yet has also pulled the lights back over a new one-piece bumper, taking on a faster, rakish, slippery look.
It comes by its new profile honestly: the Ram has spent some 300 hours in wind tunnel testing alone. The result is better aerodynamics, but also the quietest Dodge cab yet. With the air flowing smoothly over and off the truck there is none of the buffeting noise of the previous generation.
Currently, it's safe to say that with this makeover (it's now in its third generation) it is reaching icon status. But the bigger story is actually inside where a completely new design shows up the old one as just plain bad.
The new interior features redesigned, bolstered seats and soft-touch material in two- and even three-colour patterns (rather than nasty hard battleship grey plastic). Elements in some of the higher end models include a new centre console, upper and lower glove boxes and a sculpted dashboard featuring chrome, leather and cloth accents, including items such as real saddle stitching across the dash.
Other available options include power adjustable pedals, double the number of previous storage spaces and for the first-time items like heated and cooled front seats; heated rear seats and even a heated steering wheel.
With this new interior, Dodge appears to be back in the same league as its chief rival, Ford's F-150.

Chrysler's first SUV is Revealed in Detroit

Under a storm of ticker tape, Chrysler unveiled its first ever sport utility vehicle (SUV) at the Detroit Motor Show. Once the applause, and the paper shower, died down it was clear to see that Chrysler has not taken any chances with the styling of this potentially best-selling vehicle.



At the front, the new Aspen features the bold 'egg crate' chrome grille as used throughout the Chrysler range. This is shared with the large Chrysler saloon we get in Europe, and Chrysler referred to the Aspen as the "300 of SUVs", meaning that it is to be treated as a premium product, but retails well below the established marques' premium rivals.

Though the Aspen has shades of Chrysler's large Voyager MPV, it is considerably more upright. Under the bonnet is the obligatory V8 engine, with US customers getting a choice of 4.7 or 5.7-litre Hemi. The latter features cylinder deactivation in an attempt to reduce the fuel consumption to acceptable levels.

Our photographs straight from the show floor do not convey this car's size. For starters, it can seat up to eight passengers, and is 150mm longer than the Range Rover. It is unclear whether the Aspen will make it to Europe when production begins this autumn, though the lack of a diesel option and the column-mounted gearchange make us believe not. Jeep is a sister company to Chrysler and we don't think the European SUV market would support the Aspen's introduction.

2009 Pontiac G3 - Car News

Pontiac has confirmed it will sell the G3 five-door hatchback in the U.S. for the 2009 model year.

The G3 is based on the Chevrolet Aveo5, which is in turn based on the Korean Daewoo Kalos. The G3 has previously been sold in Mexico as a sedan and in Canada as a five-door hatch called the G3 Wave. Though the Aveo is also offered as a sedan, Pontiac will only bring a hatchback model to the U.S.

Mechanically identical to the Aveo, the G3 will use a 1.6-liter four cylinder engine mated to a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, an auxiliary audio input jack, four airbags, and GM’s OnStar system. Outside, Pontiac badges and grille designs replace the usual Chevrolet elements, with standard fog lamps and hatch spoiler adding visual flair.

While an econobox hatchback doesn’t match Pontiac’s performance philosophy, the G3 is an important addition to the lineup. When G3 sales begin in spring next year, Pontiac will have four cars with EPA highway fuel economy of over 30 mpg: the G3 (34 mpg), Vibe (32 mpg), G6 sedan (33 mpg), and G5 coupe (37 mpg). That should help raise Pontiac’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rating and attract buyers.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but based on the price differential between the identical Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5, we expect the Pontiac-badged G3 to carry a slightly higher price tag than its Chevy counterpart.
